A recent update from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) brings
promising news for older adults managing heart health. Medicare now covers Wegovy, an
obesity drug, for reducing the risk of serious heart problems. This follows the FDA’s
approval of Wegovy for this purpose.
Medicare’s coverage of Wegovy is specifically for reducing cardiovascular risks, not weight
loss alone. This decision allows further access to weight-loss drugs for individuals with
obesity or overweight conditions facing other health challenges.
The CMS’s move reflects a commitment to improving health outcomes by ensuring access
to effective treatments. Medicare drug plans can now add Wegovy to their formularies,
providing ongoing access.
However, drugs approved solely for weight management won’t be covered under Medicare
Part D. The regulatory change comes amid discussions about potential impacts on federal
spending and efforts to lower drug prices.
